Background of the study
Globalization has reshaped linguistic landscapes worldwide, and Nigerian Pidgin is no exception. As a dynamic creole language, Nigerian Pidgin absorbs elements from global languages and cultural trends, leading to rapid semantic change. This study appraises how globalization influences semantic evolution in Nigerian Pidgin by examining shifts in vocabulary, meaning, and usage in urban centers. Digital media, international trade, and migratory flows have introduced new concepts and lexical items, while traditional meanings are often reinterpreted in a modern context (Afolabi, 2023). The research utilizes corpus analysis of social media posts, broadcast media, and conversational data to track semantic shifts over time. It also explores how speakers negotiate conflicting meanings and integrate global influences with indigenous linguistic patterns. The findings are expected to contribute to theories of language change and provide insights for educators and policymakers aiming to standardize and preserve Nigerian Pidgin in a globalized era (Okeke, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Despite clear evidence of globalization driving semantic change in Nigerian Pidgin, there is limited research quantifying these changes and exploring their implications. Preliminary observations indicate that the influx of global influences may lead to ambiguity and loss of traditional meaning. This study seeks to systematically document these changes and assess their impact on communication and cultural identity.
Objectives of the study

  • To document semantic changes in Nigerian Pidgin influenced by globalization.
  • To analyze how global and local factors interact in shaping meaning.
  • To evaluate the impact on communication and language standardization.
    Research questions
  • What semantic changes have emerged in Nigerian Pidgin due to globalization?
  • How do global influences interact with local usage?
  • What are the implications for cultural and linguistic identity?
    Significance of the study
This study is significant as it addresses the rapid semantic evolution in Nigerian Pidgin caused by globalization, offering insights for language preservation and education. Its findings will guide efforts to maintain clarity and cultural relevance in a rapidly changing linguistic environment (Chinwe, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to Nigerian Pidgin and focuses on semantic changes due to globalization, excluding other linguistic dimensions.
    Definitions of terms
  • Semantic Change: The evolution of word meanings over time.
  • Globalization: The process of increased worldwide interconnectedness.
  • Nigerian Pidgin: A creole language widely used in Nigeria.
